Assessment is integral to all teaching and learning at ABIS. MYP Science assessment requires teachers to assess the prescribed subject-group objectives using the assessment criteria. In order to provide students with opportunities to achieve at the highest level, we develop rigorous tasks that embrace a variety of assessment strategies. As units of study enfold, like we have just done in cell structure, we conduct formative assessments in order to adjust instruction to best meet the needs of the students. Formative assessments are essentially the practice leading up to a final summative assessment.

Formative assessment guides teacher instruction and gives students feedback on their progress. Summative assessments are assigned as a way for students to demonstrate their knowledge and to “show what they have learned”.

During this week, the eighth-grade science students have been engaged in their criterion A summative assessments in both Science and Math. This follows their successful exploration of cell structure in science and the Numbers 2 unit in mathematics. We encourage parents to regularly check for updates on the units of study and assessment dates, typically posted on Managebac at the start of each unit.
