This week, our Grade 10 students successfully completed their summative assessments for Criteria A, B, and C in the unit on Factors Affecting the Rates of Reaction. These assessments gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their scientific knowledge, experimental skills, and ability to analyze data as part of preparing them for their upcoming E-assessments later in the year. Assessment feedback and grades will be shared with them early next week.
We have now transitioned into our next area of study, focusing on the unique properties of carbon and its central role in organic chemistry. To build a deeper understanding of this topic, students have explored the impact of crude oil—researching its social, economic, and ethical dimensions. In addition, they have examined natural gas and crude oil extraction, fractional distillation, and the various applications of the different fractions produced.
This new unit not only connects classroom knowledge with real-world issues, but also encourages students to think critically about the broader implications of scientific advances on society and the environment.
