This week, the ABIS Community Service students visited Al Safaa girls school here in Sohar. As we walked through the doors of the Al Safaa school, each of us was handed a small gift with a greeting that said, “When you enter this lovely school, consider yourself one of the special members of an extraordinary family.”
We then made our way to the grade 5 classroom where 32 students were eagerly waiting to meet us. After introductions by Ziad (the community service President), we set up four groups and began getting to know our new friends. One group focussed around providing some playful math games (Anton, Sulaiman, Abdullah, Shamma, and Taif) and another on learning and practicing some new English vocabulary (Ziad, Feras, Fiza, and Abhishek). One of the groups was outdoors and prepared some interactive team building games where smiles and laughter were on every girls face (Israa, Hadeel, and Jaira). And the forth group, which was one of of the highlights, was about making and playing with SLIME (Joury, Connor, Maria, and Hannah A.). As the morning progressed, and the children rotated from group to group, it was easy to see the Omani students were glowing with smiles at each activity. And of course, the ABIS students enjoyed giving freely and actually doing some “hands-on” Community Service!
The head mistress, teachers and students of Al Safaa made us feel warmly welcomed and it was very much a day of sharing and giving from both the Al Safaa school students and ABIS Community Service students. We hope we can spend more time with these children again soon, likely inviting them over to spend a couple of hours with us here at ABIS. Keep checking for more to come with ABIS Community Service. Together we can make a difference!
