The past two months have been highly productive as we successfully completed two key units:

Factors Affecting Rates of Reaction and The Impact of Crude Oil and Organic Chemistry.

Students have deepened their understanding of scientific concepts in these units. They have also completed assessments in both units, with the most recent one conducted this week.

Throughout these units, students have developed essential skills that will support their upcoming e-assessment later in the year, and more importantly, will serve as a strong foundation as they transition into the Diploma Programme sciences. These transferable skills include:

  • Formulating scientific questions about factors affecting reaction rates (e.g., how particle size influences the rate of a reaction).

  • Designing experiments to test variables such as concentration or temperature (e.g., the reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium).

  • Justifying the choice of variables and controls in rate experiments.

  • Collecting and processing data from reaction rate investigations (e.g., measuring gas volume over time).

  • Interpreting graphs to identify trends, such as the effect of catalysts on reaction rates.

  • Evaluating the reliability of data and suggesting improvements (e.g., using a gas syringe for more accurate measurements).

All grades have been posted on ManageBac, and assessment papers have been returned to students for review and reflection. We wish our Grade 10 students a fruitful and restful term break and look forward to welcoming them back as we continue preparing for their final examinations.
