Grade 9 science have completed their unit for this term on acids and bases around us and their impact on the environment by conducting a laboratory investigation this week using sulfuric acid and copper (II) oxide to produce copper (II)sulfate crystals. From the survey we conducted in class on 17th October 2023, the students generally felt that their attitude to science has tremendously improved. This of course is partly attributed to the positive culture and environment that we have nurtured in the classroom. This said, experimental work in the laboratory has indeed played a significant/major role in changing the students’ attitude towards science.
The experimental skill is an ability in which students are able to question a phenomena, do the experiment, observe the processes, record data of their experiment, analyze and give explanations / reflect on the trends observed. Critical thinking is skillful in thinking deeply about the problem, such as knowledge about methods, investigation and rational thinking, and such an ability to apply those methods.
Practical work has been able to promote students’ positive attitudes and enhance motivation for effective learning in science. It has helped to improve their communication skills in order to solve problems in science and thus become more motivated in science.
