Book Week starts next week, with all kinds of activities going on around the school to promote the love of reading. Book Week events include mystery readers in the morning and at lunch, dedicated Drop Everything And Read times each day, and our Book Character Parade on Wednesday, October 3rd at 8:45. Parents are welcome to join in the fun, in costume or not. Additionally, year groups will be having their own special Book Week activities throughout the week.

I would like to draw your attention to one special event, which is kicking off this week, our House Reading Challenge. Students will be coming home with a special reading log, which will track how many pages they have read. Every page that a student reads earns him or her a point. The house that collects the most points will be declared our House Reading Challenge Champions. This is our first house event of the year, and also allows us to official announce our new house team names, the Dolphins (blue,) Leopards (green,) Falcons (red,) and Desert Foxes (yellow.)

Students may begin collecting points on Wednesday, September 26th, and need to hand in their reading logs to their teachers/advisors by Tuesday, October 2nd. Every page that a student reads counts as a point. Since we are trying to encourage students to read for pleasure, comic books, picture books, novels, or non fiction books in any language are all counted equally. Reading aloud to your child, is one of the best ways to develop their love of reading, so those pages count as well.

We will announce the winning house at a special reading assembly on Wednesday, October 3rd at 12:15. This time will also be used to announce the winners of our Harris Burdick Short Story Competition. Parents are of course welcome to attend.
