This week, ninth-grade students studied the unit “Values and Literature,” delving into translated world literature through Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea.

The students analyzed the narrative’s artistic elements, starting with the character of the old man, Santiago, armed with willpower, through to the plot that embodies his epic struggle with the marlin and sharks in the open sea.

They also examined the significance of time and setting, extracting noble human values such as endurance, patience, and indomitable determination in the face of challenges.

This analysis enriched their literary appreciation and enhanced their understanding of narrative structure and central themes.

The students concluded their study realizing that translated literature serves as a cultural bridge expressing shared human experiences.
