The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone, filled with new experiences and challenges. For our Grade 6 students, their journey into MYP Science began with a crucial lesson on lab safety.
The students used an engaging activity using the “See, Think, Wonder” routine. Images depicting various scenarios in a science lab were projected, prompting the students to use descriptive language to describe what they saw. Some images showcased students working carelessly, with chemicals spilled and food present in the lab, highlighting potential hazards.
Through a “Think, Pair, Share” activity, the students dug deeper into the consequences of unsafe lab practices. They identified potential risks, such as chemical burns, fires, and injuries, and brainstormed preventative measures to ensure a safe and responsible environment. This collaborative discussion culminated in a list of essential lab safety rules, which were then reviewed and reinforced.
The highlight of the lesson was a captivating demonstration by four brave volunteers. They showcased the proper way to light a Bunsen burner and burn a magnesium ribbon, adhering to all safety protocols. The students were mesmerized by the bright white glow of the burning magnesium.
To further emphasize the importance of safety precautions, the students were introduced to the emergency equipment available in the lab, including the eye wash station and safety shower. They learned how to use these tools in case of accidents, ensuring their preparedness in any situation.
This engaging and informative session served as a perfect introduction to MYP Science for our Grade 6 students. They not only gained valuable knowledge about lab safety but also experienced the thrill of scientific inquiry in a controlled and responsible environment. We are confident that they are now well-equipped to embark on their exciting journey of scientific discovery, embracing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
We extend a warm welcome to our Grade 6 students and wish them all the best in their MYP Science journey!
