In this term, Grade 9 science class is exploring the sustainable ways humans can interact with ecosystems. The students were tasked with creating mini-ecosystems to foster contextualized and inquiry-based learning. Building the mini ecosystems provided students with hands-on learning experiences. Instead of just reading about ecosystems in textbooks, students got to actively engage in the creation and observation of a real ecosystem.
The Mini ecosystems allowed students to see the interconnectedness of living organisms and their environment in a tangible way. This contextualized learning has helped students grasp complex concepts like for example the key concept of ‘systems’ by seeing how different elements within an ecosystem depend on each other for survival.

“Working with mini ecosystems promotes environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility towards nature. I have gained insight into the delicate balance of ecosystems and the impact of human activities. This can contribute to the development of environmentally conscious citizens.”
