If we are really concerned about our children’s well-being, safety and ability to make good choices, then parenting is not an easy job! You have to do the hard stuff.

Children are savvy. – they know how to by-pass online age-restrictions, create multiple online identities and generally access whatever they want to -which is not always safe or desirable.

  • You need to be hands-on. Let your kids know that you can take their phone at any time and check their activity. at this age, vioLation of their prIvacy has to be balanced by their ability to make good choices. You are their parent and should be looking out for them!
  • All electronic devices should be taken away at bedtimes. These include school iPads, any mobile devices and gaming devices. Be firm about this. Not negotiable. They need their sleep. If they need to do something before sleeping – suggest that they read a physical book!
  • Learn to access and use the apps that they use – so you know what the platform does. Generally children and parents access different apps for good reasons. But be able to check their apps.
  • Do other activities that exclude electronic devices. like family chats, walks, sports, board games.

Your kids learn more from observing what adults do rather than listening to their instructions. Be the role model that shows them that physical presence and interaction builds true lasting rich relationships rather than browsing social media.
