Our Grade 9 scientists have launched into their new unit, “Acids and Bases Around Us!” — and we jumped straight into hands-on investigation!

Students began by testing four unknown household liquids, using their observations and evidence to classify the substances and identify the key properties of acids and bases. Throughout the investigation, they also reinforced the importance of laboratory safety and responsible scientific practice.

Rather than simply memorising definitions, students used the Claim → Evidence → Reasoning (CER) framework to explain and defend their conclusions. This encouraged them to think like scientists: What do we observe? What evidence supports our claim? How can we explain what is happening?

Coming up this week:
Students will investigate commercial acid–base indicators and then take their inquiry a step further by creating their own natural indicators from everyday materials such as red cabbage.

By connecting familiar substances to real-world chemistry, our inquiry-based approach encourages students to observe, question, investigate and make evidence-based decisions about the world around them.
