The energy in the music room has shifted from focused preparation to absolute joy this week! Students across all grade levels are in incredibly high spirits as they master the lyrics for their Summer Concert songs.
To help them transition from simply knowing the music to performing with confidence, we integrated a variety of drama games into our rehearsals. These games are much more than just fun breaks—they are essential tools that help our students build trust, break out of their shells, and develop the spatial awareness needed for a brilliant stage production.
Early Years (KG1 & KG2)
Rhythm, Words, and Play
Our youngest stars have been busy cementing their lyric memorization through playful movement. By pairing drama games with their song lyrics, they are building memory pathways through physical play, ensuring they feel secure and happy when they step onto the stage.
-
Learner Profile: Caring – Showing support and cheering on their classmates during performance games.
-
ATL Skills: Self-Management (Affective Skills) – Building resilience and positive motivation through playful group activities.
Grades 1 & 2
Collaborative Performance
For Grades 1 and 2, concert preparations took a theatrical turn. Through ensemble-building drama games, students practiced how to listen and react to one another without talking, a crucial skill for any group performing live on stage.
-
Learner Profile: Open-Minded – Embracing new roles and creative challenges during our drama warm-ups.
-
ATL Skills: Social (Collaboration) – Working cooperatively in small groups to share space and mirror each other’s movements.
Grades 3 & 4
Character and Expression
Grades 3 and 4 used drama games to dive deeper into the emotional heart of their concert pieces. By acting out the “stories” behind their lyrics, they are learning how to use their facial expressions and body language to communicate meaning directly to the audience.
-
Learner Profile: Communicators – Utilizing both vocal expression and physical theater to bring their songs to life.
-
ATL Skills: Thinking (Creative Thinking) – Imagining different scenarios and translating abstract emotions into physical stage actions.
Grades 5 & 6
Polishing and Unifying the Ensemble
With The Jewel of Muscat production now successfully behind them, Grade 5 has smoothly transitioned back into concert mode. Both Grades 5 and 6 used drama games this week to sharpen their teamwork and vocal presence as they head into the final stretches of the year.
-
Grade 5 Focus: Diving into their new concert repertoire with high energy, using theater games to build physical confidence and vocal projection for their upcoming songs.
-
Grade 6 Focus: Balancing their concert preparations with the final polishing of their Graduation Song, engaging in collaborative vocal warm-ups that emphasize vocal blend and emotional unity for their big milestone.
-
Learner Profile: Principled – Understanding the importance of their individual roles and how their reliability impacts the entire team’s success.
-
ATL Skills: Communication (Non-Verbal) – Developing the ability to read the room, anticipate group movements, and give seamless cues.
Director’s Note
A truly great performance requires more than just pitch-perfect singing—it requires a connected team. Seeing the laughter, collaboration, and mutual support during our drama games this week assures me that our students are not just ready to sing; they are ready to shine together. Stay tuned!
