In our Grade 7 science class, we are currently exploring how science allows us to separate matter into useful materials, building on our in-depth study of the different states of matter. This week, students engaged in an inquiry into various separation techniques and their practical applications, notably examining the distillation of crude oil. They participated in hands-on laboratory activities where they practiced methods such as simple distillation to separate liquids based on boiling points, magnetism for extracting magnetic materials, using a separating funnel for immiscible liquids, and filtration to isolate solids from liquids. These experiments enhanced their practical skills and deepened their understanding of the scientific principles underlying each technique.
