Maths is like exercise for the brain. MYP maths is important as we learn why and how maths evolves to help us solve real-life problems. The skills we learn here are crucial for success later in grades 11-12. I generally don’t give homework as we do most exercises in class. But I have noticed some students need some extra time. In that case they need to finish their work at home
You can help your child by observing the following:
- don’t do their work. As parents your input should be minimal.
- Ensure they are working with no distractions from phones, iPads and TV. (take them away if necessary)
- They should not be working for more than 15-30 minutes on maths.
- Encourage writing and reading actively to promote literacy and numeracy.
- Writing is a particular challenge as most information is electronic. But encourage your children to WRITE notes. In DP, you will have 2-3 hour exams that are written! So this skill needs to be developed. Also there is ample research that shows that writing encourages long term memory retention and learning.
