This morning in advisory we spoke about note taking–how students can go about doing it and why they should.
The research is pretty clear on this. Note taking, when done properly in class and at home, works. It improves retention of facts, understanding of concepts, and improves exam performance.
The style I spoke about today is known as the Cornell Method. Click here for the sample I gave the students today–it also includes more information about note taking. The Cornell Method divides the page into two parts, essential questions and key information. As students read or listen, they organize their learning into essential questions and then write the related details in the opposing column.
Quality note taking requires time and hard work. We are really challenging our students to be close readers. Note taking is about getting into the text, rather than passively staring at the page.
We hope in the coming weeks to emphasize this skill with the students. For parents at home, when you see your child reading for homework, encourage them to take notes. It really works!
