It has been seven weeks into the first term and we have completed some assessments in every grade for MYP. This is by no means comprehensive but it does allow us to get an impression of the students.
Grade 7 have made a hard-earned progress as we had to ” close the gaps” with required prerequisite skills. The class as a whole have shown that they are capable of dealing with the challenges of high pressure and expectations.
Grade 8 have done a challenging summative in which they learnt a topic, planned how to teach it, then taught it and reviewed peer assessments which they created, and ended with a reflection on what it was to teach. I believe that some of these learning methods are invaluable in that it creates an atmosphere of active learning.
Grade 9 were off to a slow start and took some time to settle in and start taking work seriously. The emphasis is on improving self- study habits and discipline in doing regular work (at home as well). They had to accept that the workload had changed and that more active learning was required. I think we are now on track. So we should see an improvement in assessments to come.
As the first term reports are due soon, please take the opportunity to review your child’s grades on Managebac and talk to your child’s teachers should you have any concerns. I do notify all parents as soon as I grade summative tasks.
