Celebrating Musical Growth, Creativity and Community

It has been another wonderful week of music-making in the ABIS Performing Arts Department! As we approach the mid-term break, students have continued building on their learning through **singing, movement, instrumental performance, music notation and creative expression**. Across the Primary School, our young musicians have been developing greater confidence, independence and collaboration as they apply their musical skills in different activities.

This week also provides an opportunity to celebrate **Omani Women’s Day**, recognising the important contributions of women to Oman’s culture, education, arts and wider society.

KG1 & KG2 – Growing Through Songs, Stories and Movement

Our youngest learners continued exploring how music connects with stories, celebrations and everyday experiences. Building on their previous learning, students developed greater confidence in singing familiar songs, responding to musical cues and expressing ideas through movement.

Musical games and storytelling activities encouraged children to recognise patterns, follow changes in tempo and explore how sounds and actions can communicate feelings and ideas. These experiences continue to strengthen their listening skills, imagination and confidence when participating with others.

**IB Learner Profile: Communicators** – expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas through singing, movement and storytelling.

**ATL: Communication Skills** – listening attentively, responding to instructions and sharing ideas through musical and physical expression.

Grades 1 & 2 – Strengthening Musical Skills and Ensemble Playing

Grades 1 and 2 continued making connections between **reading music, singing and instrumental performance**. Building on their previous exploration of musical notation and tuned percussion, students worked towards greater accuracy and confidence when interpreting and performing musical patterns.

Singing and movement activities helped reinforce their understanding of beat, rhythm, pitch and tempo. Students also continued developing their ability to listen to one another, coordinate their playing and contribute positively to group music-making.

These activities support the progression from recognising musical symbols to applying musical understanding in practical performance.

**IB Learner Profile: Thinkers** – using their musical knowledge to recognise patterns, make connections and solve performance challenges.

**ATL: Social Skills** – cooperating with others, taking turns, listening respectfully and contributing to ensemble performances.

Grades 3–6 – Applying Musical Knowledge Through Performance and Creativity

Grades 3–6 continued developing their musical independence through **singing, digital music notation, movement and theatre activities**. Building on their work with Flat.io, students strengthened their understanding of how musical ideas can be represented, organised and developed through notation.

Singing activities encouraged attention to musical accuracy, expression and ensemble awareness, while movement activities provided opportunities to interpret rhythm, tempo and musical character.

Theatre games continued to support improvisation, concentration, collaboration and creative expression. Through these experiences, students are learning to make more thoughtful artistic choices and reflect on how their individual contributions support successful group performances.

IB Learner Profile: Reflective** – recognising their progress, responding to feedback and identifying ways to improve their musical and performance skills.

**ATL: Thinking Skills** – applying prior knowledge, making creative decisions and evaluating musical ideas and performances.
