Exploring Music Through Singing, Stories, Instruments and Movement
The Performing Arts Department has had another active and creative week, with students across the Primary School exploring music through singing, movement, storytelling, instrumental performance, music reading, and theatre games. Movement to music was an important part of learning across all grade levels, encouraging students to listen, respond and express musical ideas physically.
KG1 & KG2 – Songs, Stories and Music in Our Lives
Our youngest musicians continued developing their musical confidence through new songs and movement activities. Students also revisited and retold familiar stories, exploring how music can help bring characters, actions and emotions to life.
We extended this learning by discussing the role of music at different occasions and events. Students began thinking about where we hear music, why people use it, and how music can contribute to celebrations, ceremonies and other important moments in our lives.
IB Learner Profile: Communicators – expressing ideas through singing, storytelling, discussion and movement.
ATL: Communication Skills – listening, responding, sharing ideas and communicating through music and movement.
Grades 1 & 2 – Reading, Playing and Moving
Grades 1 and 2 learned new songs while continuing to develop their confidence as young performers. Students explored music reading, making connections between musical symbols and the sounds they represent.
They then applied this understanding to tuned percussion instruments, developing coordination, listening, and ensemble skills. Movement to music provided another opportunity to respond to beat, rhythm, tempo and musical character.
IB Learner Profile: Risk-takers – developing confidence to sing, move, read music and perform with others.
ATL: Self-management Skills – developing concentration, coordination and responsible use of instruments during individual and group music-making.
Grades 3–6 – Songs, Notation, Movement and Theatre
Grades 3–6 continued to expand their musical skills through a combination of singing, music notation, movement, and theatre activities. Students learned new songs and continued exploring how music can be represented visually using Flat.io.
Through digital notation activities, students strengthened their understanding of how musical ideas can be read, written, edited and performed. Movement-to-music activities encouraged students to respond physically to musical elements, while theatre games supported creativity, collaboration, concentration and expressive confidence.
IB Learner Profile: Inquirers – exploring how musical ideas can be represented, interpreted and communicated in different ways.
ATL: Thinking Skills – applying musical knowledge when reading notation, working with Flat.io, responding creatively to music and making performance decisions.
Celebrating Learning Through the Performing Arts
Across all classes this week, students experienced music not simply as something to listen to, but as something they can sing, play, read, create, move to and communicate through.
By combining music with storytelling, movement, technology, and theatre, we continue to give students opportunities to develop their musical understanding while building confidence, creativity, and collaboration.
We look forward to another week of making, moving and learning through music! 🎶
