Primary Music Weekly Blog
Rhythm, Stories, Theatre, Notation & Digital Music
Another creative week has unfolded in Primary Music! Students continued building on previous learning while exploring some new dimensions of the performing arts.
New songs were introduced across all classes this week, bringing fresh opportunities for singing, listening and performance. Students are developing accurate pitch, rhythm, clear words, expression and the ability to sing together as an ensemble.
We also brought theatre games into several of our lessons. Through movement, expression, imagination and teamwork, students explored how musicians and actors communicate ideas to an audience. These activities are helping develop confidence, creativity, concentration and collaboration while bringing another dimension to our music-making.
KG1 & KG2 | Rhythm, Instruments & Stories with Music
Our youngest musicians continued exploring rhythm and classroom percussion instruments, but this week we also brought stories into our music-making.
Students discovered how music and sound can help tell a story. We explored questions such as: What might footsteps sound like? Which instrument could represent rain? How could we make music for a happy character, a giant or an animal?
Through Stories with Music, children experimented with instruments, voices, movement and sound effects to bring characters and events to life.
Theatre games added another playful dimension as students used their faces, bodies, voices and imaginations to respond to characters, actions and different moods.
New songs were also introduced, giving students opportunities to combine singing, movement and musical expression.
Our focus: Steady beat • rhythm • instrument exploration • storytelling • movement • imagination • singing • listening and responding
Grade 1 | Rhythm Composition & Musical Stories
Grade 1 continued developing their own rhythmic compositions. Students practised their patterns, listened carefully and made changes to improve their performances.
We also explored Stories with Music, investigating how rhythm, instruments, voices and movement can help communicate what is happening in a story.
Students experimented with creating simple sound effects and musical responses for characters, actions and events. This encouraged them to think beyond simply playing an instrument and begin asking:
“What do I want my music to communicate?”
Theatre games supported this learning by encouraging students to use movement, facial expression and imagination alongside their musical ideas.
Imagine → Create → Practise → Perform → Reflect
Grade 2 | Composing Rhythms & Telling Stories Through Sound
Grade 2 extended their rhythm compositions by developing longer and more organised musical patterns.
Alongside this work, students explored how music can be used to tell stories and create atmosphere. They experimented with choosing instruments and sounds to represent different characters, events, actions and moods.
Theatre games encouraged students to think about character, movement, expression and communication, helping them make connections between music, drama and storytelling.
New songs provided another opportunity to develop singing, rhythm and ensemble skills.
Grade 3 | Music Spellings, Notation & Performance
Grade 3 continued developing their understanding of staff notation through music spellings.
Using the musical alphabet — A, B, C, D, E, F and G — students practised locating notes accurately on the lines and spaces of the treble staff.
Words such as BAD, DAD, EGG, CABBAGE and BAGGAGE provide an enjoyable challenge while strengthening note recognition.
New songs and selected theatre games added a performance dimension to our lessons, encouraging confidence, concentration, communication and expressive movement.

Grade 4 | Music Spellings, Flat.io & Performance
Grade 4 continued developing music notation skills while becoming more familiar with Flat.io.
Students are learning to enter notes accurately, listen to playback and identify mistakes. This is helping them understand that digital notation is not simply about entering notes—it involves listening, checking, correcting and improving.
New singing repertoire and theatre activities also provided opportunities to step away from the screen and develop ensemble awareness, creativity and performance confidence.

Grades 5 & 6 | Oman National Anthem, New Songs & Performance Skills
Grades 5 and 6 continued their digital transcription of the Oman National Anthem using Flat.io.
Students focused increasingly on accuracy in pitch, rhythm, note values, measures and bar lines. Playback has become an important assessment tool: students listen to their work, compare it with the music they know, identify inaccuracies and make corrections.
New songs were also introduced to both grades, balancing our digital work with live singing and ensemble performance.
Theatre games brought another dimension to lessons, encouraging students to think about stage presence, communication, movement, concentration and working together as performers.
Music Is More Than Notes!
One of our big ideas this week has been recognising just how many different ways we can communicate through the performing arts.
For KG1–Grade 2, Stories with Music have opened opportunities to connect imagination, storytelling, movement and sound. Across the grades, theatre games are helping students become more confident and expressive performers, while our new songs are developing singing and ensemble skills.
At the same time, older students continue building increasingly sophisticated skills in notation and music technology.
Whether we are telling a story with a drum, creating a rhythm, acting out a character, learning a new song or transcribing the Oman National Anthem, we are learning that music is ultimately about communicating ideas, feelings and stories with others.
