This week, the Grade 11 chemists successfully concluded their study of Periodicity for both SL and HL, marking the completion of Structure 3. To bring these theoretical concepts to life, students conducted a hands-on lab investigation into trends in reactivity by observing the behavior of alkali metals. Through these experiments, students analyzed the increasing vigor of reactions down Group 1 and monitored characteristic color changes in indicators, providing clear evidence of the formation of basic oxides and hydroxides. This practical work further solidified their understanding of the transition from basic to acidic oxide behavior across Period 3, bridging the gap between atomic structure and chemical property trends.
Looking ahead, next week will be entirely dedicated to revision and consolidation. Students are preparing for a rigorous assessment comprising Paper 1A, 1B, and Paper 2 designed to mirror the final IB DP examination format they will face in Grade 12. This summative will cover all material from Structure 1, 2, 3, and Reactivity 3. With five major units remaining;Thermodynamics, Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, and Electrochemistry. Our primary goal is to maintain this momentum and complete the core syllabus by early December. This aggressive timeline is designed to maximize the “runway” for intensive revision and past-paper practice in the new year.
