Following our exploration last week into the foundations of rhythm and the social power of music, our students have moved from observation to application. This week, the Music Department was a hub of creative inquiry as students began to see themselves not just as listeners, but as active contributors to our shared musical landscape.

Early Years (KG1 & KG2)

Building Performance Stamina

Building on their introduction to rhythm, our KG stars are now focusing on Performance Readiness. They have been practicing their songs for the Summer Concert, focusing on how to maintain a steady beat while managing the excitement of being on the stage.

  • Learner Profile: Risk-Takers – Stepping out of their comfort zones to perform in front of peers.

  • ATL Skills: Self-Management – Managing nerves and staying focused during repetitive rehearsals.

Grades 1 & 2

The Mechanics of Community Music

Last week we asked why music brings people together; this week we looked at how. Students investigated the specific roles people play in a musical community—from the composer to the technician to the audience.

  • Strand: Music in Society.

  • Key Question: How can we participate in music in our community?

  • Learner Profile: Caring – Understanding that being a “good audience member” is a way of supporting our friends’ artistic efforts.

  • ATL Skills: Social Skills – Working in small groups to create a “classroom concert” protocol.

Grades 3 & 4

Stories Without Words

Our exploration of Expression and Narrative took a deep dive into how music tells stories when there are no lyrics. Students experimented with “Mood Mapping,” using different instruments to represent a character’s journey.

  • Core Concepts: Tradition & Audience.

  • Activity: Analyzing how traditional Omani melodies convey history and pride to a modern audience.

  • Learner Profile: Inquirers – Testing how changing a tempo can completely change the “story” of a song.

  • ATL Skills: Thinking Skills – Connecting specific musical elements (like a minor key) to specific emotional outcomes.

Grades 5 & 6

The Ethics of Artistry

Picking up from our discussion on activism, students this week focused on Social Responsibility. We looked at the balance a musician must strike between their personal artistic vision and their influence on the public.

  • Core Focus: Ethics & Community.

  • Debate: Does a musician have a moral obligation to address global challenges, or should music be purely for entertainment?

  • Learner Profile: Reflective – Assessing our own habits as “ethical consumers” of music.

  • ATL Skills: Communication – Formulating clear, evidence-based arguments regarding the effectiveness of music as a tool for social change.

Upcoming Events

As we continue our journey, keep an ear out for the sounds of the Summer Concert rehearsals drifting from the Mazoon Theatre. Our students aren’t just practicing songs; they are practicing how to be more connected, global citizens.
