In Grade 11 Chemistry, we have recently completed our exploration of the different homologous series as part of Structure 3, and we have now transitioned into studying the reactions of organic compounds. This week, students examined free radical substitution reactions in alkanes, including their role in real-world applications such as the destruction of the ozone layer. We also introduced electrophilic addition reactions in alkenes, helping students understand how unsaturated hydrocarbons undergo chemical change.
Next week, we will continue building on this knowledge by exploring nucleophilic substitution reactions as part of Reactivity 3. Overall, students are making good progress in covering the syllabus and are developing a solid understanding of key organic chemistry concepts. Students will likely sit an end-of-unit test on organic chemistry on 26th April, ahead of the upcoming end-of-year examinations. They are encouraged to begin reviewing all concepts from Structure 1, 2, and 3 to ensure thorough preparation for the comprehensive final Chemistry exam.
