The grade 8 students take responsibility to teach their peers about a specific narrative element of the novel they are studying. Last week, Mona presented an activity on characterisation and Fatma on Setting. Mona had the students create character posters with clear success criteria; Fatma used images to have students determine the setting and what was happening in that setting.
Today, Ryan presented an activity on conflict in the novel. He introduced the 3 types of conflict and then gave students a conflict to act out based on random selections. For all activities, the students were highly engaged and eager to participate in their peers’ activities. The students who presented the activities experience a sense of accomplishment when they see that their peers enjoy the learning. I look forward to our Thursday classes to see what activities the students design (and they give me ideas to for my own lessons)!
