Grade 7 have been learning to use a variety of strategies to support their language acquisition across content areas. One evidence-informed approach and strategy is translanguaging.

Translanguaging strategies leverage student home languages in order to build background, make connections, develop conceptual understanding, demystify command terms, and strengthen ATL and content languages. Each new unit begins with an exploration of key terms and concepts. Even if these words are already known, we take the opportunity to explore them again in the context of a new unit. This same strategy can often be incorporated into formative and summative assessments. Home languages and literacies are bridges to successful learning in another language. We acknowledge that all our students have established competencies and knowledge in their home languages. These are strengths they bring with them. Translanguaging strategies acknowledge these strengths and honor each student’s cultural identity.
