For the past 3 weeks, we have been looking at the steps involved in scientific research, and for our current grade 7s, the unit will not make much sense to them without them being able to relate to what they study. In order to reinforce inquiry in science, the students had the opportunity to plan and design an investigation. After planning and designing, the students implemented their plans for the investigation. They spent the last session in the field collecting samples and bringing the samples to the lab to start their experiment. This experiment is expected to take about 2 weeks to complete after which the data will be analyzed by each student, following the necessary scientific protocol. As a teacher, it was satisfying seeing students put into practice what they had learnt in class and seeing some of the IB learner profiles being displayed by the students. Students took risks collecting water samples and asked many questions as a demonstration of their inquiry skills. We are expecting the students to come up with some fascinating discoveries when the experiment is completed. We will keep you posted!
