Reading is an essential skill that opens up a world of imagination and knowledge for children. However, reading is not just about decoding the words on a page, but it also involves analyzing the characters and their actions in the story. In our Grade 1 classroom, we have been practicing reading aloud stories and analyzing the main characters.

Analyzing the main characters of a story helps students understand better the events that happen in the story. It also helps them to predict what is going to happen and the lesson the character will learn. By analyzing the main character, students can develop a deeper understanding of the story and its themes.

When analyzing the main character, we ask students to pay close attention to what the character says, thinks, and does. By examining the character’s words, thoughts, and actions, we can infer their motivations, personality traits, and the consequences of their actions.

To guide our analysis, we use questions such as: Why did the character act this way? What are the personality traits of the character? What do you think about the character’s choices? Was it right or wrong for the character to act this way? Why? What did the character get from acting this way? These questions prompt students to think critically about the character’s actions and motivations.

Remember: Next time that you read a fiction book, don’t forget to analyze the main character!
