So often, students are handed written music and asked to learn to play it. But what do you do when there isn’t any written music? The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have been experimenting with this very question. In Music class, we have been listening to the 1980’s classic, “IKO IKO” and trying to work out the melody, the rhythms, and creating our own version of the song, all from listening. The students have been creating their own melodic lines, rewriting verses, and building rhythms all from scratch. And when there are 60+ students in the room, this is no easy task! There have been many students stepping into leadership roles with their classmates and the collaboration and connection has been incredible. They should be very proud of themselves.
