This week in Information Literacy classes, K2 to grade 3 have been investigating book awards, and in particular, the Caldecott medal. This award is given each year to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book. This medal has first awarded in 1938.
Grades K-2 read two of these distinguished books, ” A Ball for Daisy” by Chris Raschka and “This is Not My Hat” by Jon Klassen. They discovered that stories can be told just with pictures, and also that pictures can add different information from the words in books. Our friendly library “book worm” Dylan joined the conversations! Grade 3 read another distinguished Caldecott award winner, “Trombone Shorty” written by Troy Andrews and Illustrated by Bryan Collier. This book won its Caldecott in 2016 and has stunning illustrations. While reading this amazing story, grade 3 also discussed setting and point of view.
Grades 4, 5 and 6 discussed search engines this week, and learned a bit about how those search engines work. They learned some tricks about how to pick the best search terms to get what they are looking for. They also learned about some kid-friendly search engines. The links to some of those can be found right on the library homepage under “Learning Resources”.
