This week Grade 8 Scientists were continuing to work through their unit on ecosystems. To focus on their statement of inquiry

(SOI) The Earth will become uninhabitable for humans and many organisms if we continue to damage the environment.

they were producing a written piece of work on one of the following questions.

  • Do you feel that people inventing sustainable technologies can solve climate change?
  • What is a fair way for developing nations to grow and continue to move out of poverty but also keep carbon emissions from growing globally & causing climate change?
  • How do you think we should be responding to what is increasingly being called the climate emergency?

Their work will be assessed using Criterion D: reflecting on the impacts of science.

To help their understanding the students re wrote the assessment criteria, from the International Baccalaureate, in their own words and to relate more to the task.

On the left is the IB language and on the right is the students language.

They had a deadline for a draft version this week. They then assessed each other’s work and gave constructive feedback on

  • What was done well
  • What improvements could be made

If you would like to learn more about the MYP assessment you could ask them to show you their assignment and see what grade you would give, based on the marking rubric.
