Half term is over and we have been frantically covering new materials in Science.

Grade 12 Biology students finished a Human Physiology SL and got started with the HL part of the unit (immunity and vaccination). Grade 12 Chemistry students built a voltaic cell and covered electrolysis, performing the famous electrolysis of molten lead bromide as an example.

Grade 11 Biology students were working on carbohydrates and lipids and performed a lab to produce a standard curve in order to determine the concentration of reducing sugars, using a colorimetric method. They will use the same standard curve in the near future to investigate the rate of reaction of the enzyme invertase. Grade 11 Chemistry students finished with the HL and SL components of the second topic, atomic structure, and will be starting this coming week with the third unit, the periodic table.

Finally, grade 7 students did an experiment about forces and extension of a spring (Hook’s law) and talked about mass, weight and gravity. Next week we will be finishing the first unit of enquiry and they will get tested before proceeding with the next topic.
