Building Musical Confidence Through Creativity, Collaboration and Performance
This week in the Performing Arts Department, students continued building on their musical experiences through singing, movement, instrumental performance, music notation and creative expression. Our focus shifted towards applying previously learned skills with greater independence, confidence and understanding. Across the Primary School, students explored how music brings people together, communicates ideas and provides opportunities for creative expression.
KG1 & KG2 – Connecting Music, Stories and Celebrations
Our youngest learners continued exploring the relationship between music, storytelling and everyday life. Building on last week’s discussions about music for different occasions and events, students developed their understanding of how songs and movement can help express feelings, tell stories and bring communities together.
Through familiar and new songs, children strengthened their ability to recognise musical patterns, respond to changes in tempo and participate in coordinated movement activities. Storytelling and musical games encouraged them to connect sounds, actions and imagination while developing their listening and expressive skills.
IB Learner Profile: Communicators – sharing ideas, feelings and experiences through singing, storytelling and movement.
ATL: Communication Skills – developing active listening, responding to musical cues and expressing meaning through sound, words and movement.
Grades 1 & 2 – From Reading Music to Making Music
Grades 1 and 2 continued developing their understanding of musical notation and instrumental performance. Building on last week’s introduction to reading music and playing tuned percussion, students focused on making stronger connections between written musical patterns and the sounds they perform.
Singing activities supported pitch awareness and musical memory, while instrumental exploration encouraged students to listen carefully, maintain a steady beat and coordinate their playing with others. Through movement activities, students reinforced their understanding of rhythm, tempo and musical structure.
These experiences supported the gradual transition from recognising musical ideas to reading, interpreting and performing them with increasing independence.
IB Learner Profile: Thinkers – applying musical knowledge to interpret patterns, solve performance challenges and make musical decisions.
ATL: Thinking Skills – recognising patterns, making connections between notation and sound, and applying prior learning in new musical situations.
Grades 3–6 – Developing Musical Independence and Expression
Grades 3–6 continued extending their musical understanding through singing, digital notation, movement and theatre activities. Building on their previous work with Flat.io, students explored how musical ideas can be organised, represented and refined using digital notation tools.
Singing activities encouraged greater attention to pitch, rhythm, expression and ensemble awareness. Movement activities helped students interpret musical character and structure, while theatre games provided opportunities to strengthen improvisation, communication, teamwork and creative confidence.
An important focus was encouraging students to move beyond simply following instructions towards making thoughtful musical and artistic choices, recognising how different elements contribute to an effective performance.
IB Learner Profile: Reflective – considering their musical progress, recognising areas for improvement and developing confidence through practice and feedback.
ATL: Self-management Skills – developing focus, perseverance, organisation and responsibility during rehearsals, creative tasks and collaborative performances.
Celebrating Progress Through the Performing Arts
Across all grade levels, our learning continues to progress from exploration and discovery towards understanding, application and independent expression.
Whether through a simple song, a rhythmic pattern, a digital composition or a theatre activity, students are developing the confidence to communicate ideas and collaborate creatively.
As we continue our musical journey, we celebrate not only what students can perform, but also how they listen, think, create, collaborate and grow as young musicians and performers.
We look forward to another exciting week of musical discovery, creativity and performance! 🎶
