This week, our Grade 7 scientists officially kicked off their new unit on Forces, Energy, and Work. To build a foundational understanding, students have been working in collaborative research groups to become “experts” on a specific force.

Each group is responsible for creating an 8-slide presentation that deconstructs their assigned force—ranging from Gravity and Friction to Electrostatic and Magnetic forces.

The Mission:

  • Defining the Force: Distinguishing between contact and non-contact forces.

  • Visualizing Physics: Creating diagrams with force arrows (vectors) to show the direction and magnitude of the force in real-world scenarios.

  • Predicting Impact: Analyzing how their force can start or stop motion, and change an object’s speed, direction, or shape.

  • Critical Thinking: Exploring a world without their assigned force—would life be easier, or would the world fall apart?

We will move on to experimenting with different types of forces in the lab next week once the presentations are done.
