Grade 11 Chemistry students sat for their Pre-IB Chemistry Test this week and will receive feedback next week. For the past three weeks, they have been working through a foundational unit we call Pre-IB Chemistry. This introduction has covered key concepts such as:

  • Atomic structure: protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic and mass number

  • Electron configuration

  • Atoms vs ions

  • Writing chemical formulae

  • Groups and periods using electron configuration

  • Word equations and balancing chemical equations

  • Basic lab skills

  • Types of chemical reactions

  • Calculating relative formula mass

These fundamental concepts provide the building blocks for success in the IB Diploma Programme. From next week, we will begin Structure 1, our first full DP Chemistry unit, where students will extend and deepen their understanding.
