This week the lab activities have focused mainly around waves, since was the fresh topic we started with the grade 7 students. We produced a wave machine, froze a series of waves using a stroboscopic light of equivalent frequency, talked about the different types of waves and wave characteristics and finally we started the construction of several shake tables for students to test building models under earthquake conditions, and to research experimentally about architectural solutions to minimize earthquake damage in building structures. We will continue with the project for the coming week.

Grade 11 Biology students finished with the topic on Ecology and started with Evolution and biodiversity . The grade 11 Chemistry students were learning how to solve Born Haver cycle problems, an application of the Hess law.

Grade 12 Biology students are deep into the last HL unit of the syllabus (plant biology) and talked this week about transport systems in plants. We measured experimentally the rate of transpiration using potometers and calculated the impact of the wind speed on this rate. Chemistry students continued with the revision of the firs 4 units of the syllabus, focusing on the practice of the different types of problems.

Next week is going to be busy as we want to finish the grade 12 Biology units and start with the revisions and to continue with the grade 7 projects.
