This week in 8th-grade science class, students continued their study of cell reproduction and Mitosis. They have spent the past two weeks delving into the structure of chromosomes, the stages of the cell cycle, and how uncontrolled cell division can lead to cancer. This important groundwork helped set the stage for next week’s hands-on lab where students will extract DNA from strawberries. Getting to see DNA samples would help them appreciate this unit more.

It’s rewarding to see students starting to think like scientists – asking questions and making more connections between new ideas and what they already know. I look forward to reporting on further progress in understanding this fundamental area of science.
