What a week!

As I write this, I am conscious of how many members of our community will be feeling the very real effects of this weeks flooding, home and infrastructural damage, electricity loss, water contamination, and poor phone or internet services. It is my sincere hope that  these challenges pass by you quickly and that your families are safe and healthy.

In G7 I&S, we had been scheduled to engage in the oral presentation phase of the summative research project when the storms hit. Students would have presented their completed product to their peers, shared their process and reflections,  and ultimately, receive summative feedback for Criterion C (Communication) and Criterion D (Critical Thinking).

Of course “the best laid plans of mice and teachers” often end up shattered by unpredicted weather events. In an effort to respond to the crisis with some stability, ABIS chose to provide online opportunities so our community of learners could continue to engage with school in a meaningful way. In MYP, we used Google Classroom to help with that.

With the help of the Classroom platform and technology already in the hand of our students, G7 I&S still had the opportunity to present their work. Instead of doing it live, they had the opportunity to create an iMovie, Video, or voiceover slide show. This, of course, gave the students more scope to creatively use their interests and strengths to develop an audio-visual presentation, whilst also availing of support and feedback from family at home. Google forms provided us with an additional useful tool for combining pre-submission checklists and self-assessment opportunities. I have been incredibly impressed by the submissions I have received thus far.
