For our students in grade 7, science wouldn’t make sense without an experience of what is studied in class. We have been looking at ecological factors and it was time for our wonderful grade 7 students to take their lessons a step further by designing their own experiments. Students explored how various factors such as altitude, distance from the school pond and different times of the day affect things like soil salinity, temperature, wind speed, and dissolved oxygen in water. It was amazing to see students confidently manipulating variables and scientific equipment. In the end, they collected all the necessary data and they started analyzing the data in the form of graphs and basic mathematical operations like finding averages. Following the graph when we get back to school, they will be interpreting their results using scientific reasoning. The break they have today is a well-deserved one and I hope to see them back refreshed to delve deeper into other aspects of the environment.
