Substances move in and out of cells by various mechanisms. As biologists it is important to understand the processes by which substances move in and out of the cells in our body. Understanding these mechanisms is the first step at understanding how the immune system fights germs and protect the body against infections. For our grade 11 students, understanding these processes is important as they continue to explore membrane structures in living cells. As part of their studies, students presented their research on models of the cell membrane and discussed the functions of the various parts. This rounds up the unit on membrane structure and movement of materials into and out of cells. The next unit seeks to build on this firm foundation where students will explore cell compartmentalization and stem cells.
