After researching the history and methods of 20th century abstract art, students in Grade 9 are now busy planning and executing their own works of abstraction.
How can we take a real-life object and break it down into something less recognizable? Here are some methods we came up with:
- Using geometric shapes
- Flattening the image by painting the background on “top”
- Extreme cropping or zooming
- Extending lines to the edge of the page
- Showing multiple viewpoints at once
- Using non-realistic colors
- Simplifying by removing some elements
- Using non-realistic lighting instead of a clear light source
