After researching the history and methods of 20th century abstract art, students in Grade 9 are now busy planning and executing their own works of abstraction.

How can we take a real-life object and break it down into something less recognizable? Here are some methods we came up with:

  • Using geometric shapes
  • Flattening the image by painting the background on “top”
  • Extreme cropping or zooming
  • Extending lines to the edge of the page
  • Showing multiple viewpoints at once
  • Using non-realistic colors
  • Simplifying by removing some elements
  • Using non-realistic lighting instead of a clear light source
