We are focusing on the physical sciences this term with grade 7s working on motion, forces and energy and grade 8s focusing on Waves, sound, heat and light. We are exploring these ideas within the context of understanding these phenomena and using that knowledge to improve our lives. For example, motion gives us the opportunity to examine underlying patterns of nature – the movement of the earth around the sun reveals the patterns of days, years and seasons, while the motion of the moon reveals to us how tides work. Knowing this, we can plan activities that benefit society. (such as agriculture and fishing, for example)
Similarly understanding waves has allowed us to create technology that benefits us – such a TV and radio, ultrasound devices, infra-red devices, hearing and vision aids, X-rays, etc.So go on a voyage of exploration with your kids and discuss some of these ideas with them. Curiosity is the well that feeds innovation!
