In G7 science students are investigating pure and impure substances. Part of that investigation includes hands-on lab work in order to work with dissolving mixtures and pulling them apart again. To do this, students mixed the solute (aluminum potassium sulfate) with the solvent water. After dissolving, students hung some string into the solution. As the solution evaporated, crystals formed (see photos). The crystal precipitate is simply the original solute taking on a new form.
Through this experiment, students gained first hand experience with pure and impure substances, as well as the different parts of a mixture and how they combine and come apart.
