Thank you to everyone who bought the homemade goodies from our fundraisers last week, and a BIG thank you to the G7 students & parents for any extra shopping trips and food preparation support you gave to this project. Together we raised about 100 OMR ($256 US). Proceeds from this fundraiser are going toward improving the bedrooms & lofts, and buying an industrial strength washing machine for Foyer House Orphanage in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Of the many benefits of this type of “service learning” fundraising project, are the opportunities to apply several real-world math skills, including data collection, unit conversion, spreadsheet practice, using fractions, decimals, & percents, cost analysis, logic, reasoning and more. Students collaboratively chose an item to sell and determined from a recipe all the costs of the ingredients and used this data to analyze costs, pricing, and profit. One rule was that it had to be “homemade” not a mix or simply store bought. This provided an extra challenge of learning how to prepare food which students can always benefit from doing.

Another aspect of this project was about finding the most sustainable products, locally made / grown whenever possible. We also tried to avoid using plastics and styrofoam when serving the food.

The donation has been sent and received and the money is already at work improving the lives of children in the DRC.

Thank you again for all your support!!!
