In a session led by Mr. Mwita and supported by Mr. Adams, grade 10, 11 and 12 students listened, inquired and discussed drug abuse and addiction.

Students are curious about drugs at this age… why is alcohol or smoking such a big deal? Are all drugs really so harmful? Why would I ever be pressured to do something if I didn’t want to? So many teens still feel invincible and may not even take seriously the risks of use and abuse.

If we are not careful, teachers and parents can present an overly dogmatic view of drugs and lose credibility with students. Students can often turn exclusively to peers and surround themselves with an echo-chamber of information that leads them to false conclusions. Mr. Mwita offered a forum for open questions and some debate. The conversation turned to the benefits of positive social relationships as the key to avoiding the temptations of substance use and abuse.

Consider asking your student if they heard any insights that were thought provoking.
