Grade 7 investigated digestion in Science this week. To help us visualise the path taken by food through our body, we modelled the function of a number of different digestive organs to ‘digest’ some baked beans and biscuit. The mouth (hands in a beaker) first crushed and mixed the food into a lovely mush. The stomach added digestive enzymes and acid (food colour) and continued to mix. The pancreas added further enzymes and the small intestines absorbed nutrients (sponges). The large intestine absorbed water (pressing and squeezing the mixture through a stocking) before excreting the left-overs.
