Weekly Music Blog – Winter Concert Preparations Begin!

ABIS Performing Arts Department

Last week was an exciting and creative time in the music room as all classes—from our youngest learners in KG to our confident upper primary musicians—continued preparing for our upcoming Winter Music Concert. The school has been buzzing with rhythm, melody, and joyful teamwork as students explore sound, create music, and rehearse their performance pieces.

KG1 & KG2 – Exploring Sounds and Creating Soundscapes

Our Kindergarten musicians spent the week discovering how everyday objects and classroom instruments can create unique sounds. Students explored loud/soft, fast/slow, and high/low sounds while experimenting with percussion instruments.

Highlights:

  • Creating simple soundscapes using shakers, drums, rainsticks, and body percussion

  • Learning to copy, repeat, and respond to rhythmic patterns

  • Practicing keeping a steady beat—an important musical foundation

  • Beginning rehearsals for their Winter Concert songs

Our KG learners are becoming confident sound explorers, using imagination and curiosity to shape their musical ideas.

Grade 1 & Grade 2 – Soundscapes, Rhythm, and Musical Storytelling

Grades 1 and 2 deepened their understanding of how sounds can express ideas, feelings, and stories. Students worked collaboratively to design their own soundscapes, representing environments, characters, or scenes connected to their learning units.

Highlights:

  • Building multi-layered soundscapes using classroom instruments

  • Practising rhythms using syllables, gestures, and percussion

  • Developing teamwork through group decision-making

  • Learning concert pieces and rehearsing confidently

Students are showing excellent creativity—experimenting, adjusting, and refining their soundscapes with increasing independence.

Grade 3 & Grade 4 – Singing, Rhythm Work & Instrument Skills

Our middle primary musicians focused on combining rhythm, pitch, and ensemble skills through singing and instrument practice.

Grade 3 Highlights:

  • Recorder practice focusing on B–A–G and simple patterns

  • Strengthening breath control and articulation

  • Rehearsing their concert songs with improved confidence

Grade 4 Highlights:

  • Developing Ukulele skills (strumming patterns, chord changes)

  • Vocal warm-ups and singing technique

  • Teamwork activities to prepare for ensemble performance

Both classes showed fantastic focus and energy as they prepare for their winter performance pieces.

Grade 5 & Grade 6 – Ensemble Practice & Performance Readiness

Upper primary students stepped into a more advanced role this week, preparing their songs with strong musical discipline and expression.

Grade 5 Highlights:

  • Singing with harmony and dynamic control

  • Exploring sound exploration tasks linked to concert themes

  • Rehearsing two major concert pieces with maturity and teamwork

Grade 6 Highlights:

  • Finalising performance arrangements for their concert songs

  • Practising vocal projection, phrasing, and group coordination

  • Some groups experimenting with adding instrumental layers

Our oldest primary musicians are showing leadership and responsibility—excellent role models for the younger grades.
