Grade 8 students have accomplished much learning about natural hazards this term by exploring the geography and geology of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. They now know the acronym CCRIE which helps them remember the components to present in a case study: Causes, Consequences, Responses, Innovations, and Economic impact.

This week they collectively completed their first Case Study based on the 2020 Taal Volcano Eruption in the Philippines. They did quite well using the sources provided to locate the specific information. Sources were often differentiated at various reading levels for the students. The students also learned to use ChatGPT to simplify an online text to where the student feels confident in their understanding of the text.

So, what’s next? Well, they will work with a partner to write a Case Study on a natural disaster they selected from a list. They will engage in the research process as set out by the MYP Investigating Objective to produce their summative case study by 15 October.
