In the past three weeks, our Grade 9 science students have embarked on an exciting journey into the world of biological molecules. This week, the unit took a hands-on turn as students investigated the presence of lipids in various food substances. The atmosphere in the classroom was electric, with students fully engaged and collaborating seamlessly. They worked in teams to conduct experiments, using simple tests to identify lipids, which are essential components of our diet and play crucial roles in cellular structure and energy storage. Students began by hypothesizing which food items, such as butter, oil, and nuts, would contain lipids. The enthusiasm was palpable as groups shared their findings, discussing the implications of their results and the importance of fats in nutrition. What stood out during this investigation was the remarkable collaboration among students. They not only worked together to conduct experiments but also engaged in discussions that deepened their understanding of lipid functions in living organisms. This unit on biological molecules serves as a solid foundation for the more advanced topics they will encounter in the Diploma Programme Biology. The hard work and curiosity displayed by our Grade 9 scientists will undoubtedly pave the way for their future studies in biology.
