In Grade 8, the students have been looking at how Music can color our perspective of different contexts. Taking the classic film, “An American in Paris” as a jumping off point, the students looked at how the audience’s perspective of French music works or distracts from the concept itself. For their summative, the students were asked to compose a short piece of music in an assigned genre that tried to express a particular emotion. How does anxiety sound in ballet music? Love in Samba?  What about happiness in the style of Country/Western? It has been interesting to see the students embrace unknown genres as a way to communicate ideas and emotions.
