In mathematics, Grades 9 and 10 have started with the Statistics and Probability unit. Mathematics is traditionally seen as a black and white subject with one correct answer and one way of doing a problem. This unit opens students’ eyes to the potential messiness of data, the power of statistics, and the ways they can be used and mis-used.

Grade 9 and 10 are preparing to go to Sri Lanka in November. Using statistics relating to this country, the students worked in groups to describe an average Sri Lankan, and describe the country.  They also used the statistics to help them understand why a Sri Lankan family may need help with housing. This resulted in some interesting findings. For example, the life expectancy of the average Sri Lankan is 79. This is very high, even compared to highly-developed countries. The reading levels of the people are also excellent. So what factors lead to Sri Lanka having economic difficulties?

On Sunday, October 9th we had the first assessment of the year. After this, it is time for Algebra.
